Today ground was officially broken at the site of the brand new, Scotch Plains - Fanwood Community Garden. This new Community Garden is located at the Frazee House complex (the Frazee House is visible behind several of the volunteers in the photo at the right) at 1451 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains.
The new Community Garden was partially funded by the Union County Means Green Community Garden Grants program. Each raised plot will be 10 feet by 2 feet and can be rented for only $40 for the season! The fee covers the bed, soil, compost and water making these beds a terrific bargain. To apply for a bed you can click here to get the application and read the guidelines for gardeners.
The Frazee House itself dates back to Revolutionary War times. The story goes that "Aunt" Betty Frazee was baking bread during the Battle of Springfield. The British troops led by General Cornwallis passed through the Frazees property and smelled the bread baking. Legend has it that General Cornwallis said: "I want the first loaf of bread that next comes from that oven." Betty replied: "Sir, I give you this bread through fear, not in love." Cornwallis, impressed by her courage said: "Not a man in my command shall touch a single loaf." It's not known how truly accurate the story is but the legend has lived on for a long time.
The Frazee House restoration has been a joint project between the town of Scotch Plains, Union County and the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club. Several members of the FSP Rotary are pictured above.
If you are in the area a visit to the site is well worth it. The grounds are coming along great. You can walk the trails, have a picnic or just enjoy the site.
