Don’t let fear have you...

Ever since I was 10 years old and had to have a spinal tap, I’ve been terrified of needles.  Imagine how I felt almost 4 years ago, when I found out I had Type II Diabetes and would have to prick my finger several times a day.  I was horrified, devastated and anxious about it, that’s how I felt.  So I worked to get rid of my diabetes, and I’m happy to say it’s been gone for almost 2 years now.   But I still fear needles.   I also knew that I wanted to overcome that fear...

For years I’ve thought of getting a tattoo, but the needle thing scared me so I didn’t do it.   Finally back in November of 2012, I said the heck with it!  I want a tattoo and if it means dealing with the needles I’ll be fine.   So I started researching different designs and ideas, then I asked friends to recommend a tattoo artist.  One name that kept coming up was Brian Jr, at the Ink Spot in Linden, NJ.   I met with Brian, told him what I wanted and made an appointment for the day before Thanksgiving.
Tattoo
When that Wednesday arrived, I was nervous.  But I acknowledged my fear and focused on my goal of getting that tattoo.  All those needles from the past were not going to stop me.  I took a deep breath, walked in and we reviewed the design we had discussed.  The proof looked great.  He washed my arm, transferred the template and showed me how everything was clean and sterile.  Before long the actual tattooing started and it wasn’t so bad.  Yeah, it hurt, but it wasn’t unbearable.  I even cracked a few jokes.  In less than an hour the tattoo was done and i left a marked man.

So why am I telling you this now?  Well last week I attended a 3 day Darryl Davis Seminar.  On day one he said: “Have fear.  Don’t let fear have you.”  I loved the quote so much I wrote it down.  Then I found this video where he talks about the concept.  I realized I utilize this every time I pick up the phone or knock on the door of a prospect.  As long as I stay committed to my goal I know that my past and my fears won’t bring me down.  Laser focus.  Determination.  Call it what you will.  It works. See my arm for proof.

So now, if I need a shot or have to go for bloodwork, or call a FSBO or knock on the door of an expired, I tell myself this: “Just focus on the goal, I’ve got this”. I still have fear, but it doesn't have me!
