We've helped a lot people buy, sell and rent properties - even family members. But this past Friday we had a closing with a couple that was buying a home, who have been homeless for the last four months. They had been renting in a two family home but the rental was in a flood zone. In June, they were forced to leave as the State was condemming the home and several others that were in the flood plain. So, needing a place to live, they called Team Zuhl for their purchase as we had helped them find the rental previously.
Unfortunately, they were unable to find temporary housing where they could both live. So one of them moved in with a friend about 90 minutes south of where they were, while the other moved into a facility in Pennsylvania, almost 4 hours away. Their dog, cats and birds were scattered about with different friends taking them for a week or two here and there.
We began our search, looked at a few houses and found the one they bought after a few short weeks. We helped them hire an attorney, referred a loan officer and home inspector. As time went on there were some issues that arose, but we were able to overcome all of them. The final hold up was a judgement search showed one of them had a judgement - it wasn't them, it was someone with the same name in another part of the state.
So when Friday came and we were still waiting for the final numbers so the attorney could draw up the HUD-1, tensions were high. There were tears shed, but by 2pm they finally started signing documents and a little after 3pm they were FINALLY home owners!
Today, between appointments, I called them to see how things were going. They are both SO happy! They're together in their own house, with all their pets and their belongings. They both thanked us for the hard work that we did and told us that as difficult as the process seemed at times, it made them better people. In fact, they said: "You were always trying to help us, putting our needs above yours, that's something that we are emulating every day now. You're an angel and have not just helped us but taught us so much. Thank you!"
When the phone was hung up, I pulled the car over. I cried. They were tears of joy and relief for them. A good friend from Rotary often says: "We don't do what we do to be recognized, but it sure is nice when we are."
Totally made my day!
