Why are most ice hockey player born in the first few months of the year?

Outliers: The Story of Success  was written by Malcolm Gladwell and quickly catapulted to the best sellers list.  Gladwell describes what he says are the factors that contribute to high levels of success.

The majority of elite Canadian ice hockey players are born in the first few months of the calendar year. The reason, Gladwell claims, is that  children born in January and February play in the same league as those born in November and December in the same year, but of course the older children are bigger and more mature. The bigger and more mature children are identified as better athletes at a younger age, regardless of inherent talent, and are rewarded with extra coaching and a higher likelihood of being selected for better teams as they mature. Gladwell calls this the “accumulative advantage,” because the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Right now, people with the advantage of a little extra investment cash can take advantage of a perfect storm of market conditions and use this accumulated advantage for themselves. A relatively small investment now is likely to result in a large profit later, and only because of being in the right place at the right time like the January-born ice hockey players.

Wayne and Jean Marie, this makes so much sense, and the way it relates to investments is also very true.  Great information!

Great Analogy.  I guess if you are a Canadian and are dreaming of a hockey player son you better time your conception to get that advantage.

I never thought of that. My b-day is in November, right before the cut off time to wait another year to start school, which made me younger than most. Maybe that's why I'm so awesome today? hahaha Great post. *suggested*

Not a big hockey fan, but this sure makes alot of sense. I can see it all sports. I was a June kid, so somewhwere in the middle did me no good.
